Always trying to figure out the perfect ratio of scoops of coffee beans to the perfect cup of coffee? Do your cups of coffee taste different each time you make it?

Do you catch yourself wondering how many tablespoons is in a coffee scoop? Stop you’re wondering and read on.

To cut to the chase, there are 2 tablespoons in one standard coffee scoop. So if you happened to toss the coffee spoon that came with your coffee container, just grab your tablespoon out of the drawer.

While yes, this answers the main question, my guess is you have more. Let’s keep going.

How Big is a Coffee Scoop

Let’s be real – you’ll likely see coffee scoops in all sorts of different shapes and sizes which can make this a bit difficult.

How Many Tablespoons is a Scoop of Coffee

However, the standard coffee scoop holds 2 tablespoons of ground coffee. This is the equivalent to 10 grams of coffee.

You likely won’t every measure out your coffee in grams but now you know the weight of a standard coffee scoop! 😉 My husband actually does measure out his coffee on a digital scale when he uses our aeropress.

How Many Teaspoons is a Scoop of Coffee

Now is where a bit of math comes in to play. We know that one coffee scoop is equal to 2 Tablespoons. It takes 3 teaspoons to make 1 tablespoon. Therefore, you need 6 teaspoons of coffee to make one scoop of coffee!

Most professional baristas use coffee scoops to get the right amount of coffee every time. The best way to have consistency in your coffee is to have a consistency in your brewing methods. Part of your method should be using a coffee scoop. Using the same, level tablespoons and the same water ratio will give the same same cup of coffee each time.

How much coffee you use dictates how strong or weak your coffee is. So while we know your coffee scoop is 2 tablespoon, you may like your coffee stronger so you may want to use heaping scoops rather than leveled off scoops.

On the other hand, you may like weaker coffee! If that’s you, you would likely want to have a coffee scoop that’s not quite to the top of the level.

You can also fluctuate the amount of water you use. If you don’t want to mess with the amount of coffee in your scoop since that can mess with the consistency factor, try changing the water ratio.

Use less water for stronger coffee and use more water for weaker coffee.

What is the Best Coffee to Water Ratio

One key thing to note is that everyone has a different personal taste of what a “good” cup of coffee is. Some like milder coffee that’s a bit more weak, some like strong coffee. Whichever you prefer, you need to have the same precise measurements in order to have the same cup of coffee each morning.

Did you know there’s a “golden ratio” for brewing the perfect cup of coffee? Yes, it’s true! If you’re looking to perfect your coffee drink or need a place to start to figure out if you want a stronger or weaker cup of coffee, try starting with the golden ratio.

The golden ratio was figured out by the SCAA, the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Their recommendation is a ratio of 18:1. This ends up 55 grams of coffee for 1000 ml of water.

As mentioned above, you can always change ratios to find your own definition of perfect coffee. If you’re new to coffee (or breaking up with your Nespresso machine), try starting with the golden ratio and switching up the ratios to find something that you like.

In order to try the golden coffee ratio, you’ll likely need a kitchen scale! Use your scale to measure out the exact grams of ground coffee than add in the proper fluid ounces of water.

What is a Standard Cup Size?

Now that you know the size of a coffee scoop, what is the standard size of a cup of coffee? While mugs can be anywhere from 4 ounces to 24 ounces, it seems that “standard” is a hard thing to come by.

It’s also worth noting that a standard “cup size” is entirely confusing. In America standards, we say that a cup is 8 ounces. However, when it comes to a standard cup of coffee, it’s not that .The average size of a cup of coffee is 6 ounces. Your manual for your coffee machine may say something entirely different! Like 5 ounces!

Let’s stick with the standard 6 ounces equals one cup of coffee. Keep this in mind when figuring out how much ground coffee you’ll need based on how much water you’re using.

If you only want one single cup of coffee, you’ll want one scoop of coffee grounds to 6 ounces of water. If you’re looking to have more than one cup of coffee, you’ll need to up both the number of scoops as well as the ounces of coffee.

Should You Use a Coffee Scoop?

In short, yes! One of the most frustrating and disappointing things that can happen in your morning is to take a sip of your coffee expecting one thing but getting something completely different. A lot of people guess their ratio of coffee to water and in turn, get less than ideal cups of coffee.

If you want to truly love your coffee each morning and know exactly what you’re going to get, you should definitely use a coffee scoop.

Where to Buy a Coffee Scoop

Maybe you never received a coffee scoop with any coffee maker or coffee grounds that you purchased. Time to get your hands on a proper scoop!

While yes, you can easily use your tablespoon to measure out your coffee, it’s nice to have a proper coffee scoop to make your life a bit simpler! Since most of us make coffee every single day, you don’t want to have to share your tablespoons with your cooking.

There’s a lot of different types of coffee scoops you can get. There’s clear plastic ones, stainless steel ones, wood ones and more!

Here’s a few of my favorite ones from Amazon:
