Frappe: What is it?

What is a frappe and what makes it different from other iced drinks?  Read on to discover what makes this drink so special!

What exactly is a frappe?

The frappe is a cold blended drink with a slushie-like consistency. Typically made of frozen instant coffee blended with ice and milk, it’s a smooth, icy drink that's perfect for summer!

Is it coffee?

Traditionally, a frappe is made of coffee. However, you can make other drinks — juice, tea, and chocolate, for instance — in the blended frappe style.

Where did the frappe come from?

The word frappe comes from the French word frapper, which means “to slap, knock, or beat.” But it was invented in Greece in the 1950s. The rest of the world has caught on!

How is a frappe different from a smoothie  or iced coffee?

Unlike iced coffee, frappes are blended. And unlike smoothies, frappes are blended long enough for a significant amount of foam to be created.

Is a frappe the same as a frappuccino?

Nope! A frappuccino is a blend of coffee and a milkshake.  A traditional frappe, however, is  instant coffee, milk, and ice blended and beaten until they reach a foamy consistency.
