Looking at buying a Nespresso VertuoPlus but trying to decide if it’s worth it? Look no further! Today I’m going to give you a full look at my a Nespresso VertuoPlus review that we’ve had for over a year!
For Rishi’s birthday a few years ago, I bought him a Nespresso VertuoPlus. We’re both big coffee lovers and I’ve heard fabulous things about Nespresso machines so I surprised him with one!
We’ve now had it for about well many years so I wanted to share my thoughts on it with you.

Nespresso VertuoPlus Features
Let’s start by chatting about the key features about the Nespresso VertuoPlus.
The Nespresso Vertuo Plus like other Nespresso machines, is a pod-style coffee maker. One key thing to note about this is these pods are different than the Nespresso Original. Don’t make the same mistake we did and buy the wrong pods! 🙂
The Nespresso VertuoPlus pods are larger than the originals. They’re filled with fresh coffee grounds that are sealed airtight. No spilling or messy grounds to deal with!
With the Nespresso Vertuo, you only have one button to push to make your coffee. There’s a barcode on each capsule that the machine reads to know if it should be making an espresso or an alto!
You can make a variety of different coffees with the Vertuo – espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, a mug or an alto. The options are endless!
The Pros
Size
The machine itself is super small! The water tank that’s attached to it can move around to fit to the side or behind the machine, making it easy for anywhere on your counter.
We actually have it next to our other coffeemaker since we use both of them throughout the week. There are 2 coffeemakers and a coffee grinder all in one smaller spot in our kitchen but it works just fine!
Multiple Cup Sizes
One thing we love the most about this machine is that you can make both espresso as well as regular coffee with it. When Rishi worked out of the home, he often times didn’t have time to drink a full cup of coffee in the morning before work.
(I know, he’s crazy…I always find time even if means chugging it ha!) He would make a double shot of espresso to have before his commute in to work.
Depending on the pod you use, you can brew 5 different cups of coffee. There is a 1.35 oz espresso, 2.7 oz double espresso (what Rishi drinks each morning), a 5 oz Gran Lungo, an 8 oz coffee (my usual) and a 14 oz Alto. Each capsule size is different to help you know what size coffee mug you need!
However accidents do happen, of course! One time I put my collagen powder in my mug (as I do most mornings) and put in my pod. Out came just enough coffee to cover the powder. Oops.
Turns out I used an espresso pod and not my regular 8 oz pod! That was a highly caffeinated cup of coffee once I added in my 8 oz pod to my espresso.
Taste + Technology
The taste is hugely dependent on the technology that this machine has. In true Nespresso form, they have carefully chosen the origin and roasting of each coffee blend. And with so many options, that must be quite the feat!
I love that there are so many types of flavors and pods available! I have yet to find one that I didn’t like at all and am definitely starting to find some favorites along the ways.
They also created a new brewing system using Centrifusion technology which is basically a fancy way of getting the coffee from the pod to coffee form in your cup. Your machine does capsule-specific brewing depending on the barcode reading associated with the pod you’re using.
Quickness
The Vertu Plus is ready to brew your coffee SO quickly – like 20 seconds. You just push the button on top and once the green light stops spinning, insert your pod and you can start brewing your coffee!
Quiet
There’s no crazy loud airplane noise while your coffee is brewing. It’s quiet and quick – perfect for those sleepy Monday mornings when you need to get the caffeine drip going quick!
Adjustable Tray
Have a favorite mug that’s bigger or smaller than a “normal” one? No worries! Simply move the tray up or down to accommodate your mug. Put it all the way for an espresso much (we have and LOVE these espresso mugs from Amazon as pictured below).
Recyclable Pods
Nespresso so awesomely provides bags to fill up with used pods. They have a pre-paid mailing label so you just need to drop it off at UPS and they’ll recycle it for you!
The Cons
Pod Price
The pods of the Vertuo series are more expensive than the regular ones. Not by much but still more! Because they’re different then the other machine we’ve accidentally bought the wrong pods. You need to be careful when purchasing them!
You Can’t Dispense Hot Water
Many coffeemakers have a feature that you can use them for hot water as well. Unfortunately you can’t do that with the Nespresso Vertuo Plus.
Can’t Froth Milk
Like not being able to dispense hot water, you’re also not able to froth milk with this machine.
(If you love frothed milk, check out my milk frother/steamer post!)
There’s not a ton of cons so that’s about it! Good Housekeeping gives it a score of 89/100 so I think that makes it a pretty great machine!
