Ingredient Notes

  • Coffee Beans – Picking the right beans for cold brew is somewhat subjective and depends on how you like your coffee. But I recommend a medium to dark roast since the oat milk will dull the bitterness of the coffee.
  • Oat Milk – If possible, use barista-style oat milk. The brand doesn’t matter, but barista-style oat milk is thicker, creamier, and formulated with binders, so it won’t curdle when added to acidic coffee. You could even try your hand at making your own oat milk!
  • Sweetener (Optional) – You can add sugar, sugar alternatives, natural sweetener, or coffee syrups like vanilla syrup or hazelnut to sweeten and flavor your beverage.

Equipment

If you’re making your own cold brew you’ll need:

  • Lidded Container – You’ll need a jar, pitcher, French Press, or another container so that you can combine the coffee grounds and water to steep your batch of cold brew.
  • Fine Mesh Strainer or Coffee Filter – Once the cold brew has steeped, you’ll need to strain the grounds away from the coffee. You won’t need a separate filter or any other special tools if you use a French Press to brew the coffee.
  • Digital Scale (Optional) – Brewing coffee is a science. For the best and most consistent flavor, you’ll want to measure by weight and not by volume. A digital scale is a welcome addition to all home barista’s coffee stations.
  • Coffee Grinder (Optional) – The fresher the coffee beans, the better the flavor. Whole beans ground per brew will yield the best-tasting cup with rich flavor, so a personal coffee grinder is worth the investment.

It’s also totally acceptable to use a store bought cold brew if you have one that you love!

Easy Instructions

1. Prepare the cold brew.

You can either use a cold brew maker, buy pre-made cold brew or follow these instructions:

Combine the coarsely ground coffee beans and cold water in a large jar or pitcher. Stir gently to make sure all the coffee grounds are submerged.

2. Steep

Cover the container and transfer it to the fridge to steep. The length of time the cold brew needs to steep will vary depending on how much coffee and water you use, but for the recipe, as it’s written, you’ll need 12-15 hours.

  • Cover the container and transfer to steep in the fridge for 12-15 hours.

  • Enjoy your Oat Milk Cold Brew and store any leftover strained cold brew in the fridge for later use!

Notes

The standard ratio of coffee to water is 1:4, but if you prefer a stronger brew, you can use 1 cup of grounds to 3 cups of water. Adjust the coffee-to-water and oat milk ratios according to your taste preferences. Feel free to experiment and add additional flavors like vanilla extract or cinnamon powder!

Tips and Tricks

  • Use a French Press to brew the cold brew. It’ll eliminate the additional straining step. Instead, you’ll use the plunger to push the grounds to the bottom, and you can easily pour off the strained cold brew.
  • Stove any leftover cold brew in a lidded jar in the fridge. This recipe makes enough cold brew for 4 coffees.
  • Serve the oat milk and cold brew in a mason jar with a lid. This way, you can shake the coffee instead of stirring it to create a creamy, frothy, crave-able beverage.

Serving Suggestions

You will always serve a cold brew over ice. So even though this oat milk cold brew is sippable year-round, it’s incredibly refreshing during the warmer months.

It’s not a fussy coffee beverage, so you can quickly pour it into a to-go cup and take it with you, and if you’ve looking to add a bit of extra caffeine into the mix consider making cold brew coffee ice cubes so your drink doesn’t get too watered down!

You’re missing out on a delicious beverage if you’ve never tried an Oat Milk Cold Brew with cold foam, which is especially refreshing on hot summer days! Instead of adding the oat milk directly to the glass, froth it up and add it on top. Use barista-style oat milk for the best foam texture.

FAQs

Is oat milk good in cold brew?

Cold brew is known for its smooth and less acidic flavor profile. Oat milk is a great option because it adds a creamy texture and slightly sweet flavor. The creamy flavor of oat milk can balance the bitterness of coffee, creating a smooth and enjoyable beverage.

Can you brew coffee with oat milk?

I don’t recommend brewing coffee with oat milk instead of water because you’ll clog your brewing equipment, and the extraction won’t work as intended. However, you can add oat milk to regularly brewed hot coffee, instant coffee or espresso to make an oat milk latte.

Why does oat milk curdle in cold coffee?

Oat milk can sometimes curdle or separate when added to cold coffee due to a reaction between the coffee’s acidity and the proteins in the milk. To minimize the chances of oat milk separating, a good option is always the barista-style of oat milk. This style has binders added to give the milk a thick and creamy consistency that resists curdling.
